Headlight lenses can accumulate dirt or become cloudy gradually, making the change easy to miss. Start by separating a dirty exterior lens from a lighting fault. Surface washing can remove road film, salt, and insects; it cannot repair a failed lamp, internal damage, or incorrect aim.
Start with a normal wash. Rinse grit from the lens before wiping, because dry dirt can scratch plastic. Use car-safe wash solution or mild soapy water, a soft cloth, and light pressure. Clean around the edges where grime collects. Dry the lens and check it from a few angles. Sometimes the problem is just surface film.
Identify cloudiness versus dirt
If the dry lens remains yellow or hazy after washing, ask whether its outer finish has deteriorated. Do not start sanding, polishing, or applying a restoration coating without checking what the manufacturer permits for that assembly. Some cleaning instructions exclude abrasives entirely. A restoration product's compatibility claim does not override the vehicle manual, and cracked or internally damaged lenses need assessment rather than repeated polishing.
Moisture behind the lens cannot be washed off from outside. Photograph it and consult the manual or service department about what is acceptable for that lamp. Standing water, visible damage, or a lamp that stops working needs inspection. Do not drill drainage holes, open a sealed housing, or apply heat to force it dry.
Check aim and brightness
Clean lenses cannot correct aim or an electrical fault. If one side is dim, flickers, or points noticeably differently, arrange a lighting inspection. Cargo weight can change vehicle attitude and aim; it does not physically block the lamps. Do not compensate by installing a brighter, mismatched bulb or turning adjustment screws without the specified setup.
Make it part of seasonal care
Clean headlights whenever you wash the car, and pay extra attention before winter, road trips, and daylight saving time changes. Also clean taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Visibility is two-way: you need to see the road, and other drivers need to read your position and signals quickly.
A few minutes spent on clear lights can make night driving feel less strained and reduce the chance that your car blends into bad weather.
Inspect the result with the lenses dry
Check each lens in daylight after it dries. Inspect the center, lower edge, and seams separately so a clean upper surface does not hide residue below. Use a different clean cloth for the lower, gritty areas. Tesla's exterior-cleaning instructions illustrate why product choice matters: unsuitable cleaners can damage exterior lights. Use your own vehicle's approved method.
Record what remains after the wash: exterior roughness, discoloration, a crack, internal moisture, or an electrical symptom. This gives a service shop something more useful than "the headlights seem old." Photograph both lamps in comparable daylight, but do not interpret a phone's auto-exposure as a brightness measurement.
If you are considering professional restoration, ask whether the problem is actually on the outside and whether the work includes any manufacturer-required surface protection. Also ask whether replacement is more appropriate for a damaged assembly. Washing, restoring a finish, and replacing a lamp are different jobs; a cleaning appointment should not be sold as a cure for wiring or aiming problems.
Before relying on the lamps for a night trip, resolve any known fault and confirm normal operation while parked. A cleaner-looking lens is not proof of adequate road illumination. If visibility remains inadequate, postpone the dark portion of the trip and arrange service rather than using a night drive as an experiment.
USANOOKS microfiber cleaning cloths
Separate clean cloths for glass, trim, and dirty lower surfaces. Check for grit before use and follow the vehicle's surface-care instructions; microfiber alone does not prevent scratches.
