A parking pass has two jobs that can conflict: it needs to be visible to the person checking a parked car, but it should not become an obstruction while that car is moving. The answer is not to pick one universal corner of the windshield. Different permits have different display instructions, and removable hangtags are not the same as permanent decals.

Start by identifying exactly what you have: an employee hangtag, a visitor slip, a disability parking placard, or an adhesive permit. Then separate what must be displayed while parked from what is authorized to remain attached during travel. That distinction makes the rest of the routine much simpler.

Read the issuer's instructions first

Check both sides of the pass and the issuing office's current instructions. Look for the required location, which side faces outward, the expiration date, and any vehicle or license-plate association. A readable permit can still be invalid for the particular lot, vehicle, or time of day. Keep those questions separate from the question of where to place it.

For disability placards, use the issuing motor vehicle agency's instructions rather than a coworker's habit. Virginia DMV, for example, expressly tells drivers to remove a placard from the rearview mirror when driving in its parking-placard brochure. That is a specific agency example, not a nationwide rule for every kind of parking pass.

For workplace or apartment permits, ask the parking office how to handle any conflict between its preferred placement and the vehicle's visibility or equipment. Request an approved alternative before relocating a decal yourself. A handwritten explanation beside an incorrectly displayed pass may not satisfy the people enforcing the lot's rules.

Check the view from the actual driving position

Evaluate a proposed permanent display position while parked, with the seat and mirrors adjusted normally. A spot that looks unobtrusive from the passenger seat may hide part of an intersection from the driver. Check the forward view and the area around the inside mirror. Do not solve one obstruction by attaching the pass somewhere that blocks another important view.

Consult the vehicle manual before placing anything near a windshield camera housing or other identified sensor area. For example, Tesla's camera instructions explain that camera obstructions can affect system performance. Use your own model's diagram; a dark patch of glass is not automatically a spare mounting area.

Avoid buying a holder before confirming that both its location and the holder itself are acceptable. A clear sleeve adds width and reflections, while a large clip can cover a date or barcode. Check whether an issuer permits sleeves, lamination, or attachments. Do not trim, punch, or otherwise alter a government placard to make a holder fit.

Use a parked-only display sequence

For a removable pass intended for parked display, finish parking and secure the vehicle before handling it. Place it exactly as instructed, then check readability from outside. Make sure the printed side faces the correct direction and that a folded corner or overlapping pass does not hide required information.

Display only the credentials needed for that parking session. An expired visitor slip behind the current one can make the valid date harder to find. If two permits are genuinely required, ask the issuer how both should be presented rather than layering them until neither is readable. Keep old passes out of the active display routine.

Remove the hangtag before departure

Make removal part of getting ready to drive, before shifting into gear. Put the pass in a consistent enclosed compartment where it will not slide into the footwell. Choose a location that lets you put it away while still parked; the routine should not depend on reaching across the cabin once traffic is moving.

If you notice a forgotten hangtag or fallen slip while driving, wait until you can stop safely before handling it. NHTSA explains that any activity taking attention away from driving can increase crash risk in its distracted-driving guidance. Repositioning a pass is not worth making the immediate driving situation less controlled.

Check changes when the permit renews

When a replacement arrives, compare its instructions with the old version. Confirm the registered vehicle and expiration, remove obsolete removable passes, and ask about an approved removal method for an old decal if needed. Before the next visit, verify any unfamiliar lot's requirements. A repeatable display-and-remove sequence works better than leaving every permit visible just in case.
